about

This past spring we found a lot of snails in Maine. We kept a few as classroom pets and made a habitat for them. One day, two preschoolers were speculating:

"What happens when they go in their shell? Do you think they go to sleep?"

I went on lunch break and wrote a lullaby for snails, but it quickly morphed into this song about Hide and Seek. The very first time I sang it for the preschoolers, everybody scrunched up into a little ball to "hide in their shells." Where'd they go?

lyrics

My pet snail and I played Hide and Seek
He looked for me and it took a week
And on my turn to look for him
He was hiding in his shell again

He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell

My pet snail is my best friend
And sometimes I do pretend
That I don't see him sitting there
So I take off to look elsewhere

'Cause He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell well

I know where to find him
I know where to go
It's kind of easy
'Cause he moves so slow

My pet snail and me.
We're happy as can be.
Just playing Hide and Seek it's true
There's nothing that we'd rather do.

'Cause He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell again
He was hiding in his shell well

I know where to find him
I know where to go
It's kind of easy
'Cause he moves so slow

But I love him so
Yes I love him so
I love him so
Say, where'd he go?

Did you see him anywhere?
